Dunlop Explosive Red

Dunlop introduces the new Explosive Red tennis string, a high quality (premium) co-polyester monofilament with a heat-treated outer coating that helps extend its life.

The string has a circular cross-section and is available in red (as the name suggests) and in 1.25 and 1.30 millimeter gauges.

The price of a 12-meter reel is about 16 euros while the 200-meter reel is about 155 euros.

On court – The pros

The main feature of the Explosive Red is the control. The progressive plasticization of the string transfers the maximum confidence to the player during the rallies and guarantees an excellent management of the strokes especially if played with adequate rotation.

Access to the rotations is immediate and allows the generation of strokes very heavy and difficult to manage by the opponent. Good snapback effect amplified by the heat treatment of the surface of the Explosive Red that reduces the friction of the strings in the impact phase by favoring the sliding and increasing the “turns” of the ball. As a result we will have deep and “safe” trajectories and an extremely “heavy” ball.

Definitely good power returned … but must be triggered properly and solicited by fluid and decisive strokes. Thanks to the excellent control, the Explosive Red allows you to impact the ball with violence easily finding a good depth of play but without ever going out of the way.

It also stands on good levels of tension that allows the Explosive Red to remain playable for about 12 hours.

On court – The cons

The Dunlop Explosive Red is a “tough” string intended primarily for a competitive players. It returns a lot in terms of performance but demands the same from a physical and technical point of view.

The comfort is not very high (normal given the segment to which it belongs) but still appreciable in relation to the “important” stiffness of the string.

Who it is indicated for

The Explosive Red is perfect for modern players looking for control, power and spin. Wink at big hitters who like to hit the ball all the way.

It’s a very versatile string and fits well on both boxed and profiled frames. It makes the most of “open” string patterns that can accommodate and amplify the spin and power skills typical of the Explosive red.

Testing setups

Tests were performed by stringing Dunlop Explosive Red on:

  • Wilson Blade 104 custom (gauge 1.25 pulled to 22 kg)
  • Wilson Blade 104 custom (gauge 1.30 pulled to 21 kg)
  • Diadem Nova (gauge 1.25 pulled to 22 kg)
  • Diadem Elevate (gauge 1.25 pulled to 21.5 kg)
  • Donnay Formula 100 Hexacore (gauge 1.25 pulled to 21 kg)

To conclude

Dunlop Explosive Red is a versatile monofilament oriented towards control and rotations. Returned power is “important” but not exactly free.

We would like to thank Dunlop Tennis Italy for the concession of the strings we used in our tests.
